siu-káiDo you think using the Teochew variant of Minnan is acceptable? Teochew is a variant of the Minnan dialect. It is similar, but not the same as Hokkian. Your Tiô-chiu-oē is based on Hokkian, or Teochew? I would like to have the article written in Teochew. I am a Teochew and understand Hokkian only to a very limited extent.

- It appears that Teochew is not mutually intelligible with Hokkian. In addition, the Teochew orthography (that you use) does not seem to be compatible with Hokkian. I would suggest starting a new language-version of Wikipedia in Teochew. I shall support such proposal of yours. Thank you. – Kaihsu 12:48, 1 4g 2005 (UTC)
- If I may say so, the converse is true, as well. The informal consensus reached so far on Talk:Tiô-chiu-oē is that Teochew would probably be better off with its own Wikipedia, considering the linguistic gap (aural comprehension for Southern Min/Taiwanese speakers is at most 30-40%, for me about 15%, though with some practice that could be improved). Another barrier is that the Teochew orthography is based on principles incompatible with the Pe̍h-oē-jī used here. So Teochew presents a challenge with regard to zh-min-nan's presumption of being the Min Nan Wikipedia. Creating a separate Teochew Wikipedia, while not impossible, is fraught with political difficulties. Many outsiders will find it incredulous that Southern Min (which many already consider as "just a dialect") would need yet another Wikipedia. But if the Teochew community could make its long-term commitment known and be politely insistent in presenting its case, I believe many of us here would be willing to support it. Building up an off-site test Wikipedia would be a plus, though not required. This may sound like "zh-min-nan kicking out Teochew" or ejecting it from the Southern Min linguistic branch, but the practical aspects are real. At the same time I acknowledge my own interaction with Teochew has been limited and that perhaps with time and experience I may find it less alien, though currently I am not optimistic. - Some Cantonese people have set up an off-site test Wikipedia on http://cantonese.wikicities.com/wiki/玄關 and http://cantonese.wikicities.com/wiki/Romanised_main_page. Also I would like to suggest the possibility of Teochew and Southern Min/Taiwanese co-existing under zh-min-nan.wikipedia. For example, by tagging entry name with Teochew or Holo. (I know this is not a good solution.) If the Teochew community would like to create its own Wikipedia, I would support it. However from the past experience of creating zh-min-nan and the recent request of Wu and Cantonese wikipedia, the request of a new Teochew Wikipedia would proably face many difficulties. - Wiki to me is about interactive co-editing and co-authorship. Would that still be possible in an encompassing wiki? See how this discussion in English is already (unintentionally) excluding people. By the way a more inclusive wiki tagging would actually not be necessary since it's quite obvious which is which. A-giâu 16:52, 1 4g 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, but I see you mean something like Diô-jiǔ-oē_zh-min-nan-CZ or even Diô-jiǔ-oē:Diô-jiǔ or even Diô-jiǔ-oē:Diô-jiǔ and Bân-lâm-oē:Tiô-chiu. A-giâu 16:56, 1 4g 2005 (UTC)
For Teochew, I suggest zh-min-nan-CN-44. CN-44 is the ISO 3166-2 code for Guangdong. By the way, zh-min-nan-CZ is the Czech variant of Southern Min, spoken only on the first day of April. – Kaihsu 17:51, 1 4g 2005 (UTC)
