Jī-sû[1] (eng. word) ia̍h tan-gí (ji̍t. 単語), tan-jī, sû-gí, sī giân-gí piáu-tat ì-sù he̍k-chiá sī gí-giân ūn-iōng ê chòe sió tan-goân. Pí-lūn "Pe̍h-ōe-jī" chit-ê 7 jī-bó ê cho͘-ha̍p tiō sī chi̍t-ê jī-sû. Sui-bóng sī ì-sù ê tan-goân, chit tōaⁿ ōe sī-m̄-sī sǹg chò "chi̍t ê jī-sû", tio̍h siū siá-jī hē-thóng lâi éng-hióng.

Jī-sû ê jīn-tēng hong-sek chē khoán, hâm im-ūn-lūn (phonology), chiàⁿ-jī-hoat, bûn-hoat, he̍k-chiá sī ì-bī-lūn téng hong-bīn thang hun-sek. Giân-gí-ha̍k kā jī-sû liáu-kái chò gí-lūi-lūn tan-goân, ia̍h sī kóng gí-lūi-sò͘ (lexeme), sī tô͘-ōe kap ho͘-im ê cho͘-ha̍p tī bûn-hoat lí-lō͘ tang-tiong keng-kòe ì-bī-lūn-siōng ê ì-sù seⁿ chiâⁿ ê sán-bu̍t.[2]
